One child arrives at summer camp and looks out at a crowd of strangers. Sara O'Leary's picture book asks the other campers how a friendship gets started.
Readical Key Points
- A picture book for ages 3 to 6 (preschool to grade 1)
- Illustrated by Qin Leng
- The final book in the Who We Are trilogy, after A Family Is a Family Is a Family and A Kid Is a Kid Is a Kid, according to the publisher
- Hardcover, 32 pages, Groundwood Books, 2026
The kids take turns explaining how they make friends. One asks questions, another says children can be friends without speaking the same language, and others point to listening to one another's stories, common interests and small acts of kindness. The pages move from child to child in vignettes and speech bubbles while the new camper takes in each answer.
Parents, caregivers, teachers and librarians can read it aloud before a first day at camp or school, or alongside the two earlier books in the trilogy. The answers come from the campers themselves, in their own voices. The crowd of strangers from the first page turns out to hold many ways in.
