Adversity catches people off guard in a life's weaker areas, Vickie Lanthier argues. The military veteran sets out frameworks for meeting it with deliberate action instead of reaction.

Lanthier starts from the premise that hard times will keep arriving, and that what a person can change is how ready they are and how they respond. The book pairs a mindset with practical frameworks for finding weak points in advance, regaining footing after a money blow, and widening one's influence over one's own life. She draws on a military career that included four deployments, on her work in entrepreneurship, and on interviews and research.
Readers dealing with a financial setback, stress or uncertainty, and readers who want a plan in place before the next hard stretch, are the audience. Lanthier supplies the frameworks and the steps; the storms, and the choices made inside them, stay with the reader.
