In the years after the Second World War, J. D. Salinger published nine short stories as a book, among them the first appearance of his Glass family.

Readical Key Points

  • Nine stories by J. D. Salinger, first published as a collection by Little, Brown in 1953
  • Includes "A Perfect Day for Bananafish," "The Laughing Man" and "Teddy"
  • Some stories deal with the aftermath of war, grief and death
  • Paperback, 320 pages, Little, Brown, 2018 edition

The stories move between Manhattan apartments, Connecticut living rooms, a Florida beach hotel and wartime England. Salinger's characters are often children and young adults, and the adults around them are frequently worn down by war, marriage or disappointment. The dialogue is quick and funny, and the stories keep their weight under the surface of ordinary conversations.

This paperback edition presents the stories as Salinger collected them. It suits readers of The Catcher in the Rye who want the shorter fiction, readers of the classic American short story, and anyone meeting the Glass family for the first time. Nine Stories is where Salinger's children first began to talk back to the adults.
