Elmo gets nervous at the doctor's, and Abby is so excited at the library she can hardly keep still. Anna Anderhagen's picture book offers young children movement-based ways to meet big feelings.
Readical Key Points
- A picture book for ages 4 to 7, preschool through grade 2
- Illustrated by Hisashi Maeda, with Sesame Street characters including Elmo and Abby
- Includes expert guidance from Emily McTate, PhD, a Mayo Clinic pediatric psychologist, according to the publisher
- Hardcover, 32 pages, Mayo Clinic Press Kids, 2026; part of the Everyday Feelings with Sesame Street series
Through scenes with familiar Sesame Street friends, the book names a feeling, from a nervous visit to the doctor to excitement that will not sit down, and pairs it with activities for calming the body or letting the feeling move through. No feeling is treated as wrong. The focus stays on what a child can do with the energy a feeling brings.
Parents, preschool and early-grade teachers, and school counselors can use it to open a conversation with a young child about feelings. The expert guidance behind it offers strategies, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Read together, it gives the wiggles in the title a job to do.
