A centuries-old vampire keeps house in 1990s Los Angeles, and a former junkie rock musician keeps her fed. Todd Grimson's noir novel follows what that arrangement costs them both.

Readical Key Points

  • A noir vampire novel set in 1990s Los Angeles; first published in 1996, reissued in 2025 as No. 45 in the McNally Editions series
  • A standalone novel; no earlier books needed
  • Content note: includes heroin addiction, graphic violence and sexual content
  • Paperback, 256 pages, McNally Editions (2025)

Justine has lived for centuries and sleeps through the daylight hours in a grand house in Los Angeles. Keith, who played in a rock band before heroin took over his life, lives there too and handles the practical side of keeping her fed. Local crooks and hangers-on start pressing on the household, and the pressure tests how long a human and a vampire can hold on to each other.

This paperback brings the 1996 novel back into print. It suits readers of noir and crime fiction, readers who want vampire fiction written squarely for adults, and readers of Los Angeles novels. Justine sleeps through the day. The city does its damage around the clock.
