  • Kathryn Stockett's first novel since The Help; a #1 New York Times bestseller, according to the publisher
  • Set in Oxford, Mississippi, in 1933, during the Great Depression
  • Follows an eleven-year-old orphan, an outspoken unmarried woman and a woman down on her luck
  • Reviewed in Kirkus Reviews, Booklist, Publishers Weekly and Library Journal
  • Hardcover, 656 pages

Meg Lefleur was left by her mother on a Christmas Eve and now, at eleven, counts among the older girls nobody adopts at the Lafayette County Orphan Asylum. Birdie Calhoun travels to Oxford hoping her socialite sister will help the family back home, and learns that her sister's comfortable life rests on lies. When Birdie meets Charlie, a woman with almost nothing left to lose, and their lives cross Meg's, Charlie proposes a daring scheme for the three of them to seize their own futures.

The publisher and several reviewers describe a novel that moves between humor and heartbreak. Readers who came to Stockett through The Help, and readers of Southern historical fiction, will know the ground. In 1933 Oxford, hypocrisy is everywhere and a woman's freedom is easily lost. Charlie has other ideas.
