Before Mothra flew across movie screens in 1961, she began as a novella written by three Japanese literary writers. Here it is in English, with the political edge the film softened.

Readical Key Points

  • First official English translation of the 1961 novella that became the basis for the film Mothra
  • Written by Shin'ichirō Nakamura, Takehiko Fukunaga and Yoshie Hotta; translated by Jeffrey Angles
  • Includes the translator's afterword on the novella's writing, its politics and the making of the film
  • Paperback, 120 pages, University of Minnesota Press, 2026

An expedition lands on an island in the South Pacific and carries off a group of tiny fairies, and the goddess Mothra follows to Japan to recover them. The novella's three parts were written by three authors, each taking a stage of the story. Composed months after mass political demonstrations in Japan, it carries an argument about Japan's independence in Cold War politics that the studio later toned down for the screen.

It suits kaiju and film fans who know Mothra from the screen, and readers of postwar Japanese literature and history. Angles's afterword places the story beside the demonstrations, the studio and the movie that followed. Mothra arrives here as protest fiction, not only a monster.
