Written prayers can give a quiet morning somewhere to begin. Arthur Bennett gathered prayers and meditations from the Puritan tradition into a single devotional volume.
Readical Key Points
Puritan prayers and devotions collected and edited by Arthur Bennett; first published by Banner of Truth in 1975
Arranged in ten sections, from "Father, Son, and Holy Spirit" through "Penitence and Deprecation" and "Gifts of Grace" to "Valediction" and "A Week's Shared Prayers"
Opens with the title prayer, "The Valley of Vision," and includes a preface and a bibliography of sources
Bonded leather edition, published by Banner of Truth in 2003
The prayers address God in the language of Reformed Protestant devotion: praise of the Trinity, confession of sin, thanks for redemption, and requests for grace in need and in ministry. Bennett grouped them by theme, so a reader can turn to a section that fits the day. The publisher presents the collection as a prompt to a reader's own prayer rather than a replacement for it.
It suits Christians who pray from written prayers in private devotion, families who pray together, and pastors who lead prayer in worship. Banner of Truth also publishes paperback and genuine leather versions; the store stocks the bonded leather. The book hands a reader borrowed words so that the reader's own can follow.
