Memory does not keep a neat calendar. Larry Levis lets it wander until a private life begins to resemble our own.
Readical Key Points
- Revised edition of a major collection of love poems and elegies
- Introduced by poet Paisley Rekdal
- Explores childhood, family, loss, acceptance, and the uneasy work of self-knowledge
- Paperback, 120 pages, in the Pitt Poetry Series
In Winter Stars, Levis moves through memory with a voice that can sound conversational even as it gathers grief, landscape, family history, and moral pressure. The poems question a life rather than arranging it into a clean explanation. Fathers, childhood, squandered love, and the ordinary details that survive loss return as living presences.
This revised edition restores a collection admired for the way its long, meditative lines move outward from autobiography and then turn back toward the reader. It is a strong entry point for anyone new to Levis and a welcome return for readers who value poetry that thinks in motion. The poems do not ask memory to behave. They ask what it still has to teach us.
